Wing Sing Kelong, Pulau Sibu

Wing Sing Kelong - Lunch

I had the opportunity to visit and stay in a kelong at Pulau Sibu during my course of study, it was quite an experience and for one price you get 5 meals in return. A kelong stay at Pulau Sibu is really meant for people who love to fish a lot. You basically, fish, eat and pretty much do nothing at other times (we played board games though).

Fishermen and chefs at the same time. The staff at the kelong would ring a bell to announce its meal time, conditioning us like some kind of Pavlov experiment.

Food was pretty good actually. You always have a big bowl of soup (spammed with white pepper), a fish dish and a vegetable dish. Generally, they tend to be pretty oily too.

This is not a gourmet restaurant and the food tends to be more practical, It is probably energy food for the people who worked at the kelong. So frequent flyers and picky eaters stay away.

Over the course of our stay, we had fish, deep fried with sweet and sour sauce and steamed with ginger and scallions.

Then there were a variety of stir-fried vegetables such as French beans, cauliflower and kai lan etc.

On our lunch for the first day, there was Chicken Curry too. Dessert came in the form of fruits such as sliced watermelons.

There was also night snack featuring crab porridge and bo bo cha cha. It was some heavy stuff for a night snack.

The crabs may be small but the meat was succulent and sweet. Needless to say, the guests of kelong wiped them all almost immediately.

Breakfast was Stir-fried Noodles with some deep-fried Egg Toast.

No they don’t serve TWG French Earl Grey, I brought it.
Hot and cold water were provided by the kelong.

Wing Sing Kelong is more of a (no frills) resort kelong for people who love to fish or experience a stay in the middle of sea. 2D1N with 5 meals cost about 155 RM (around 65 SGD) per person. 4 RM for the ferry from Tanjung Leman Jetty.
